Eldfjöll / Volcanoes
I was very lucky to be present for two different eruptions in the Geldingadalur valley in the Reykjanes peninsula. The first occured at Fagradalsfjall, which started in March 2021, and the second in an area very close by referred to as Meradalir in August 2022.
While hiking to the second eruption in August 2022, visitors passed the lava fields from the first site, now a year old.
Hálendið / Highlands
Iceland is an incredibly vast country with an extremely small population. The climate and landscape is so rough that year-long human habitation in the inside and some of the outskirts of the country is very limited.
Hringvegurinn / The Ring Road
Þjóðvegur 1, als known as the Ring Road, is the main road that goes in a loop around Iceland and connects most of the habitable areas with each other. Apart from air, this is often the only means by which travel between them is possible. In spite of this, and the millions of tourists that flock to Iceland every year, there are parts of the road that receive very little traffic.
If visitors have enough time, a popular way to experience Iceland is to travel along the ring road in 7 or more days (less is not recommended). The images on this page where shot while travelling along the ring road in April 2016 on my first visit to Iceland and in November 2021 on my third visit.
